The present Kumasi Fort was built by the British government in 1897 from a reconstruction of an old Fort built by Asantes in 1820. The old fort was built by Nana Osei Asibe Bonsu and used as his palace. However, it was mined and destroyed by Sir Garnet Wolseley’s expedition in 1873/74. The construction of the present fort took the plans of Captain Phillips of the Royal Engineers and the cost at completion was E4690-9s-2p exclusive of imported materials.
The fort was originally built on a hill with bricks and granites. The size is about 80 meters square with patios at each corner. The thickness of the walls is about 3 feet wide and 13 feet high. Loop holes are through the upper parts of the walls which served as snipers’ spots in defending the fort.
We are always here to help the needy peoples any where in the world.
